• Another Women's Leadership Event

    / Comments (0)

Not to be outdone by every other women's leadership event in Boston this month, The Ad Club's Women's Leadership Forum is coming up on March 21st.

Despite the noticeable lack of representatives from ad land at the event (Arnold's Pam Hamlin excluded), we're still looking forward to hearing from Project Runway quitter Maya Luz and our favorite hometown restauranteur Barbara Lynch.

Just in time for people to have almost forgotten about him, SCVNGR's Chief Ninja, Seth Priebatsch, is rumored to be making a very, very big announcement during his Keynote at SXSW on Saturday.

A source very close to the Egotist says the new product announcement is going to blow the "game layer" out of the water.

  • "Southern Comfort Goes Digital in New Orleans"

    / Comments (3)

Or at least that was the headline that was sent to us.
Not sure how "digital" this actually is, but we'll let you decide that for yourselves.

"Arnold Worldwide teams with Brown-Forman, Foursquare and Minneapolis brand design firm Cue to create a Mardi Gras outdoor promotion for client Southern Comfort in New Orleans French Quarter.

An outdoor billboard at the corner of Royal and Canal Street invites revelers to use Foursquare and check-in and “Come Back Next Year With Your Own Krewe” by entering a sweepstakes to win a trip to Mardi Gras in 2012.

Creative credits for the banner go to Arnold Chief Creative Officer Pete Favat, Creative Director John Kearse, Art Director Ben Salsky and Art Director Emily Taing."

  • RISD Faculty Vote No Confidence in Maeda

    / Comments (0)

Looks like there are more shakeups in higher education that could impact the local design community.

Rhode Island School of Design faculty have voted no confidence in President John Maeda and Provost Jessie Shefrin, the Boston Globe is reporting.

"Wednesday night's vote on the no-confidence motion was 147-32 and came after two hours of faculty debate."

This news comes on the heels of MassArt's announcement of a new president, Dawn Barrett, Dean of Architecture and Design at RISD.

Frankly, if stepping down as the President of RISD means that Maeda will write more books, we are in support of it.

  • Another Boston Flashmob

    / Comments (0)

We already voiced our feelings about flashmobs and overused media trends, but this promotional flashmob at BU was a little more... unique?... and warranted its own post.

It leaves us wondering two things: What are these BU students going to do next? And when will people stop using flashmobs as an advertising/promotional crutch?

  • 3D Printers Create Edible Objects

    / Comments (0)

3D printers aren't just for industrial designers anymore.

"An engineering lab and a culinary school have teamed up to construct novel edible objects with 3D printers that use pureed foods in place of ink.

Miniature space shuttles made of ground scallops and cheese are among the masterpieces that had already been made using 3D food printers designed by the computational synthesis laboratory at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

The lab is collaborating with the New York City-based French Culinary Institute to make new edible creations through a project called fab@home."

Read more about this epic collaboration here.

We want one of these and we want it now.
What is the first thing you would sculpt out of cheese? Best answer will be tweeted this afternoon.

  • Get Lost, Boston

    / Comments (0)

The experimental event series Platform2 in Boston is inviting members of the public to get lost and subsequently, to share and discuss their experience.

In today's hyper-geo-located world it can be hard to get lost, and the aim of the event is to create a situation for confusion in order to rethink the surrounding world.

People are invited to choose their own site and the method to get lost as long as they don't interpret it metaphorically (like getting lost on the Internet or in a video game, screen, movie, book or device).

    It works like this:

    1. Send an email to [email protected]
    2. You will receive an inspirational reading ("Getting Lost" by Franco La Cecla) and instructions for documenting your journey
    3. Get Lost
    4. Email them your documentation (10 images & text)
    5. Show up to the conversation at the Harvard Map Library on 3/10 and share your experience.

  • Modernista No More?

    / Comments (0)

"Modernista may not be called Modernista much longer," Ad Age reported last night. Turns out they may choose not to exist at all, following Lance Jensen's departure.

"Speaking to Ad Age exclusively, Mr. Koepke, the agency's co-founder and executive creative director, said that in the short term he will either shutter the shop he started a decade ago with Mr. Jensen or embark of a massive rebranding of the agency that will include a shedding of the Modernista name."

  • Putting Some Love into SEO

    / Comments (0)

We have to give credit where credit is due and today we're giving it to Greg Faucher, SEO Specialist over at AMP Agency.

Greg wrote a blog post yesterday about search and music. It was clever, informative, and all the things that we enjoy whilst perusing Google Reader. You should read it. Thankfully the good folks at AMP let us cross-post his words of wisdom here. If only all SEO Specialists could put search advice into easy-to-understand Lady Gaga references.

As someone who has spent the majority of my life around music, I recently wondered what it would be like if artists sacrificed their artistic integrity to make their songs more searchable within search engines. Call me a dork, but yes, this thought actually entered my brain and it intrigued me enough to write a blog about it. This idea would be terrible for musical integrity, but it would be great for sales and artist related search traffic.

So I thought about what some of the more popular music related search terms might be, and the first thing that came to mind was “love song.” Maybe it’s because I just got married, maybe it’s because Valentine’s Day just passed, or maybe it’s because I recently sang a karaoke version of “Endless Love” with our office manager Patty. Regardless of the reason, after researching the search volume of the term “love song,” I discovered that there are 2,240,000 monthly searches for that exact term across the world.

When you think of artists who made their living off love, who comes to mind? Luther Vandross? Lionel Ritchie? While I’m sure many of today’s 20-30 year olds were probably conceived to the music of these two men, neither Luther or Lionel were ever smart (or simple) enough to have a hit single called “Love Song.”
So naturally I asked, “who HAS had a single called ‘Love Song’”? The only 3 artists that came to mind were The Cure, Sara Bareilles, and 80’s rockers Tesla. After doing a quick Google search for the term “love song,” videos and lyrics for all 3 of these songs showed up on the first page of Google. That is pretty amazing considering the high search volume, and the number of popular love songs that exist. Tesla also had an album called “Bust a Nut,” but that’s a different search for a different day, on a different computer. Give them some slack…it was the 80’s. Tesla just might have predicted SEO would be huge while they were just learning Prodigy!

Sara Bareilles may have struck SEO gold with “Love Song,” but she sure didn’t gain any SEO points by keeping that last name. How many people do you really think can spell Bareilles? I know I had to look it up!

Note to Sara: There’s probably a reason why Lady Gaga doesn’t go by Stefani Germanotta. How about going by Sara Ellis? Just a thought…
