• How Effective Are PSAs?

    / Comments (0)

Residents of the greater Boston area should be more than familiar with this billboard from Modernista:

Now with GOOD recently featuring the following ads in light of current congressional efforts to weaken the EPA and hollow out the Clean Air Act, we just can't help but wonder, how effective are such ads?

Well, we probably won't know the fate of the Clean Air Act until Congress finally votes, but if you want to see what Stop Handgun Violence has been able to accomplish with their campaign, click here.

Of course, no discussion about PSAs is complete without mention of the venerable Ad Council. In this day and age of emerging media, just how current and how relevant are the Council's efforts? See for yourself here.

Let's be honest, we don't really have to dig deep to feel patriotic (or nerdy, geeky, dorky... take your pick), living in Boston and all. So here's the full-length trailer for Captain America. Enjoy.

  • Mystery Man Makes It Rain At Fenway Starbucks.

Last week, at our local neighborhood Starbucks, some random guy just walked right in, declared "I'm Rich!" and then showered the cafe and its patrons with $100 worth of dollar bills, all before just walking right out. As of this writing, no one knows who he is or why he did it (you know, besides him being rich). Do you?

Any tips or leads? Comment below.

As for the money, a store employee picked it all up and said she was going to donate it all to the Japan tsunami relief.

The painting was created in 2000 with oil and beeswax on Baltic birch by artist Susan Miller-Havens.

You can listen to NPR's interview with Pedro – where he talks about growing up in the Dominican Republic, "Who's Your Daddy" and the work his foundation does, among other things – after the jump here.

Some new work from Modernista! for non-profit Doc to Dock:

    Production credits go to Shilo.

Here's Modernista! co-founder and ECD, Gary Koepke on what Doc to Dock is all about:

Doc to Dock was started in 2005 by Dr. Bruce Charash as a commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative. Essentially, the organization collects unused medical supplies through its network of medical professionals and volunteers, then they sort, ship and redistribute the supplies and equipment -- enough to fill over 25 forty-foot shipping containers so far -- to meet the specific needs of hospitals in the developing world. So far, this organization has brought hope and care to more than two million people while simultaneously reducing waste in the U.S., and we have crafted our new campaign to raise awareness and advance their cause.

See the rest of the campaign here and here.

Good stuff. Of course, we expected nothing less from Modernista! and Shilo.

We know this has been on the internets for a while now. But we just couldn't resist.

GSD&M breaks new work for Framingham-based client Marshalls on Facebook. The "fan exclusive" spot is appropriately titled "Tongue Twister."

That's Jessica St. Clair performing the verbal acrobatics. Why does she look familiar, you ask? Well, you may recognize her from the classic film She's Out of My League. Or not. Actually, you probably know her from Best Week Ever, where she's been a regular. Also, she went to school around here. Yes, we still consider Middlebury, VT as around here.

Anyway, what do you think about debuting work "exclusively" to Facebook fans?

  • Sagmeister: Banana Wall And More.

Here's some nice work from New York-based typographer and designer Stefan Sagmeister. He's got a new exhibit at the Mudac Museum of Design and Contemporary Applied Arts in Switzerland, open now until June 13.

If you can't make out the Banana Wall above (yes, it's a wall made of stacked yellow and green bananas), it says "Self-confidence produces fine results." Indeed. And yes, if we make it to Switzerland by June, we'd go see the exhibit. Then again, we can probably just visit him in NYC.

  • You Are A Freak.

    / Comments (2)

Here's some nice self-promo work from Nail. As part of the Social Media Summit organized by the Providence Business News, Nail was given a full-page ad in (drumroll, please) – the newspaper. As Creative Partner Alec Beckett put it, "There was something delicious about the irony of it."

    Copy reads:

    You are a freak.

I mean, look at you: reading an ad—in a newspaper no less. Seriously, who does that? You’re even reading this tiny, boring body copy. Nobody reads copy. People hate advertising and go out of their way to avoid it. So clearly there is something seriously wrong with you.

Or maybe, just maybe, some ads are creative enough to earn the attention of people who aren’t freaks. Like you.

    Well done, Nail.
