From Nothing, Something: A Documentary on the Creative Process.

By / / Not to be confused with Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap, this is the baby of director Tim Cawley – not Ice-T (interestingly enough, the film was finished the day Art of Rap launched its trailer on iTunes. So watch out, T-Cawley may just start a rap beef with Ice-T…) The film was born as a side project by folks from Hill Holliday – who made the film at night, on weekends and instead of taking vacation. And it all came together with the help of four different local production companies: Brickyard Filmworks, Element, Toil and Locomotive. The film profiles creative thinkers across a spectrum of disciplines and finds the methods, habits, beliefs and neuroses that lead to breakthrough ideas. It’s a thoughtful, intimate, often funny look at the creative process – straight from the brains of some of our culture’s most accomplished and inspiring talents. Several of the interview subjects are based locally, from MIT Cancer Scientists W. David Lee and Moungi Bawendi, to Cambridge-based architect/Harvard professor Preston Scott Cohen, to novelist Tom Perrotta. From Nothing, Something premieres at IFFBoston this Sunday, April 29th at 5:30pm in the Somerville Theater.
