    The Boston Business Journal just announced the 75 winners in its annual Best Places to Work survey. The winners ranked highest among the 320 companies whose employees filled out an anonymous survey. And guess what?

    Allen & Gerritsen, Digitas and Hill Holliday made the cut. Also notable are Google, Yahoo and LogMeIn.

    Our Best Places to Work event recognizes the importance of cultivating a great workplace culture as a competitive advantage. Companies on our list can be justifiably proud of creating a high level of workplace satisfaction during an economy where traditional rewards like big raises and bonuses aren't as easy to give.

    BBJ's Best Places to Work program, which includes a breakfast event and editorial coverage of the top companies in each category (small, medium and large companies), will take place June 9 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

  • Aflac Gets Its Quack Back.

    After Gilbert Gottfried lost his spokesduck gig not too long ago, the hunt for a new voice was on (yes, pun intended). And helping drive the search was Digitas, on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and QuackAflac.com. As such, over 90% of the submissions were entered online. And in the end, the mantle of Aflac Duck was bestowed upon 36-year-old Minnesotan Dan McKeague – who actually heard about the contest via tweet.

    It's been a busy week in the Hub. The following agencies have recently bolstered their rosters with new additions, proving once again that the biz is definitely alive and well in Beantown (sorry, M!)

    Arnold hires George Pace

    George Pace has been named EVP, Global Brand Director for Arnold's Dell account, which the agency won in late February. He will be reporting directly to Pam Hamlin, Managing Partner and President of Arnold Boston. Having worked with clients such as Microsoft, IBM, Direct TV, Ford, Kodak and P&G, Pace brings a well-rounded, 15-year career in global brand development.

    Most recently, he was at Universal McCann serving as Managing Director, International Clients. Also notable is his stint at Arc Worldwide, where in just 18 months he grew the agency from 90 employees in eight offices to 430 employees in 29 offices. His development of their global interactive offering nabbed him a Cannes Lion, Revolution awards and Clios.

    “George is a smart, strategic and successful brand leader who has a deep understanding of technology, IT and B-to-B marketing. His extensive experience working on complex, global businesses, including IBM and Microsoft, has touched every facet of marketing communications. George is the right person to lead our global team and drive transformation for the Dell brand,” said Hamlin.

    Connelly Partners hires Scott Savitt
    Scott Savitt joins Connelly Partners as Digital Director. He will be leading Connelly Digital, which currently serves clients such as MA Office of Travel and Tourism, Samsonite, EpiPen, Staples, Tufts Health Plan and ConEdison Solutions.

    Savitt comes from Molecular, where he served as SVP, Sales and Marketing. He also spent time at Isobar, Oasis Partners and Arnold. Client credits include Motorola, the Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, Ralph Lauren, HP, Virgin Mobile, Gillette, ESPN and Citizens Bank, among many others.

    “We had been looking for not just a digital leader, but a digital visionary who fits our company and culture, our passion for media neutral and integrated solutions, and our style of solving problems colloquially and creatively. Scott is a home run hire for us,” said Steve Connelly, President of Connelly Partners.

    FORGE hires Mike Pilato
    Mike Pilato has signed on as Creative Director at FORGE Worldwide. He has spent the last three years freelancing as an art director at Full Contact, Digitas, MMB, Conover Tuttle Pace, and AMP.

    With a career beginning at Hill Holliday, Pilato has also served as ACD at Arnold. In his new role, he will be working with FORGE ECDs Rob Stewart and Mike Benes on a client roster that includes Cisco, Partners Healthcare, AAA, Tufts' Fletcher School, URI and WPI.

  • Modernista! No More.

    We'll be honest, we're Modernista! fans. And it wasn't that long ago that we were advising young advertising students to pursue a summer internship at Modernista! You know, to kick off that bright future in the industry on the right foot. Of course, with co-founder Lance Jensen's recent departure, the writing was on the wall for the shop at 109 Kingston St. – but we still held out hope, as we're sure so many others did. But tomorrow, Friday, April 29th is the last day Modernista's doors will be open.

    The agency was independent in every sense of the word, which is probably where we can attribute the greatness we had come to expect from them campaign in, campaign out. They knew how to get to the heart of the matter – with good storytelling, impeccable polish, compelling visuals and a soundtrack that was just dead-on. And boy, did they know their music. At the end of the day, they were just so. damn. cool.

    So, is greatness measured by longevity? Or legacy? We'd like to think it's the latter. It's in that vein that we don't view the agency's decade-long run as some sort of failed experiment. Because Modernista! was one of advertising's bright lights – and we'll always be proud that they called Boston home – and we'd like to think that bright light will actually continue to shine through the work they've left behind. Work that is sure to inspire and educate young would-be advertising professionals for decades to come. At the very least, that's what we'd like to think...

    OK, we're gonna stop being touchy-feely now and just let the work speak for itself – which is exactly what Modernista! did all these years.

    Good shit, right? And that was only TV...

    Now, in case you're not familiar with Modernista's work, the agency's portfolio does still live online, on their archived websites – which were "art pieces" unto themselves (by our count, there were eight iterations in all). Go ahead, check 'em out while they're still up.

    To end, co-founder Gary Koepke had this to say:

    I'm looking forward to a new chapter, and it's best for me to get a clean slate going here and start over. Lance and I rocked it – we made a lot of good albums together – and I have a lot of fond memories of this place, and I hope others do, too.

    And if that was "goodbye," here was the "hello."
